Outer shells

Inner Confidence

When your turnout gear has the proven thermal protection of DuPont Nomex® combined with the legendary strength of DuPont Kevlar® – a fiber that’s five times stronger than steel on an equal weight basis – you’re assured of superior protection against intense heat and flame.

Outer shells created with Nomex®, Kevlar® fibers and Kevlar® filament blends provide outstanding defense against heat and flame and cuts and abrasions, while staying strong and greatly reducing garment bulk.

High Flexibility

Nomex® and Kevlar® can help make your turnout gear tough and durable, yet comfortable and breathable, providing the flexibility to work a vehicle accident, ventilate a roof or drag a hose line, and the protection to fight a 3-alarm blaze.

Over 70% of all turnout gear is made with DuPont Nomex® and Kevlar®. This greatly protects against burn injuries from high temperatures, compression, contact, and even flashover conditions while providing outstanding Total Heat Loss (THL) and Thermal Protective Performance (TPP) ratings.

Kevlar® & Nomex®

When fabric made with Kevlar® fiber is engineered with Nomex® fiber, or used with another blend, it helps to enhance the tear strength and abrasion resistance of outer shells, protecting the moisture barriers and thermal liners inside.

Longevity

On average, garments made from Nomex® fiber last two to three times longer than most other standard and protective fabrics, such as 100% cotton, polyester/garment blends, and FR cotton.

Product Life

Per garment manufacturer, the average wear life of station wear made of Nomex® is about five years, and it can be washed and worn at least 125 times, making it an affordable choice.
