Station Wear

Smart Protection

Station wear made with Nomex® provides the durability, value and professional look firefighters deserve with the thermal performance and peace of mind only DuPont Nomex® thermal technology can offer. Fire departments soon discover its invaluable extra protection in cases where turnout gear is torn, rides up or is not fully closed, not to mention experiencing a dramatically lower lifecycle cost than other station wear options.

Nomex® is a revolutionary, heat- and flame-resistant fiber that reacts in an emergency. When exposed to extreme heat, Nomex® undergoes a special reaction, changing its properties to capture more energy in the fabric, helping to give the wearer valuable extra seconds of protection from heat transfer.

Nomex® also helps make station wear more comfortable, enabling the lowest possible weight at the highest level of protection and, with its higher air permeability, helps reduce heat stress. What’s more, heat and flame protection is inherent to the Nomex® fiber, so it can’t be washed or worn away.

Station wear made with Nomex® self-extinguishes so, unlike those made with cotton fibers, it maintains a superior, professional appearance after numerous launderings, including significantly less shrinkage and fading.

Flammable cotton fabrics will continue to burn long after the initial flame exposure. Burning garments will continue to expose the user to a hazardous environment until the garment is extinguished.

Permeability
Air permeability is critical to garment breathability. Air permeability enables heat and moisture vapor transmission and increases cooling, which increases breathability

Self-extinguishing
In a 3.5 sec/2 cal burn, a garment made of Nomex® alone self-extinguishes, limiting TBI to 40%, mostly 2nd degree, where non-FR cotton and poly/cotton continue to burn resulting in 84-91+% TBI, mostly 3rd degree. The resulting hospitalization cost of 1 injury at these levels is $400M with Nomex® vs. $1.2MM with cotton or poly/cotton, and is typically not survivable.
Lifetime costs
For a department of 200 users over a 4-year period, garments made of Nomex® initially cost $38M, requires no replacements, and looks better over its lifetime. Non-FR cotton initially costs only $18M, but requires annual replacement costing an additional $54M, for a total of $72M.
